Names on Kaspa, held by a contract, not a company

A .kachat name lets people find and pay you by a short name instead of a long wallet address. Names are registered, renewed, sold and bought entirely on the Kaspa BlockDAG. No server holds a name or a coin, and KaChat takes no cut of anything.

What a name can be

The registry contract checks every name, so these rules are the same in every app.

Letters, numbers and hyphens

Lowercase a-z, digits 0-9 and -, from 1 to 32 characters. A hyphen can't be the first or last character.

One owner per name, guaranteed by Kaspa

Every free name sits inside the registry on chain. Registering one splits it out, so a second registration of the same name is impossible. Kaspa's consensus enforces this, not a server.

Your profile stays on your address

Your picture, banner and bio come from social accounts you already have, like X or YouTube, and they're stamped to your Kaspa address, not to the name. Selling or losing a name never changes your profile.

Hold it on any of your addresses

Claim or buy a name with your chatting address, or pick any other address of your KaChat wallet. The name belongs to the address that paid for it. (Cold Storage addresses are watch-only in KaChat, so they can't claim or buy.)

What a name costs

Shorter names cost more. Prices are fixed in the registry contract: nobody can change them on the live registry, KaChat included.

Registering for 2 years at once costs the register price plus one year of renewal: a 5-letter name for 2 years is 35 + 8.75 = 43.75 KAS. Every transaction also pays Kaspa's small network fee.

0%KaChat's cut. The price goes to Kaspa's miners as the transaction fee.
2 KASLocked with the name while you hold it (a 1 KAS bond and a 1 KAS registry deposit). Returned when you release the name.
0.2 KASLocked by the first step of a claim, and returned when the name is registered.

How claiming works

A claim takes two transactions about a minute apart, so nobody can see the name you want and grab it first.

1

Commit

Your app sends a sealed commitment: a hash of the name, your key and a secret only your app knows. Nothing on chain reveals which name it is.

2

Wait about a minute

The registry only accepts a commitment that is at least 600 blocks old (about one minute on Kaspa). Someone who sees your name in step 3 would need their own commitment that is already that old, so they can't jump ahead of you.

3

Register

The app registers the name to your address, pays the price and returns the 0.2 KAS from step 1. If two people committed the same name earlier, the first one registered wins.

Changed your mind before step 3? Cancel the claim and the 0.2 KAS comes back to you, less the network fee.

Keeping your name

A name is paid for by the year. You can pay 1 or 2 years at a time, but never more than 2 years ahead.

A name's life

Active

The name is yours and points to your address. Registered for 1 year? You can extend it to 2 years at any time.

Renewal window: the last 30 days

Renewal opens 30 days before the name expires. Renewing adds 1 or 2 years counted from the old expiry, so you never lose or gain time. Anyone can renew any name, so a friend can renew yours as a gift.

Grace: 90 days after expiry

The name still points to you and nobody else can take it. Renew any time in these 90 days to keep it: this is the last chance to keep the name at the renewal price. The renewal still counts from the old expiry, so the grace time is paid for.

Lapsed: after grace

The name is no longer yours. It stops pointing to you and shows as available, and anyone, you included, can claim it at the full register price. Your 1 KAS bond goes back to your address.

The KaChat apps remind you when renewal opens and when a name expires. Renew during the 90-day grace period to keep it: don't wait for another reminder.

The marketplace

Buy, sell and trade names with no middleman and no escrow account. Kaspa's own rules enforce every sale, and there's no marketplace fee.

List

Set a price. The name waits in its on-chain contract, not with KaChat or anyone else, until someone buys it or you take it back.

Buy

Pay the listed price. The payment reaches the seller and the name reaches you in the same transaction: both happen, or neither does. The seller gets the full price.

Offer

Name your own price for any active name, listed or not. Your KAS waits on chain until the owner accepts or declines, you withdraw it, or it expires (at most 7 days later) and comes back to you. You can message the owner first.

Transfer

Send a name to any KaChat address, or any other standard (Schnorr) Kaspa wallet address, for just the network fee. Its paid time goes with it. ECDSA addresses and multisig or script addresses (kaspa:p...) can't hold a name, and the apps refuse them.

Release

Give a name up for good. You get the 2 KAS bond and deposit back, the time you paid for is lost, and the name is free for anyone to claim.

A name's expiry date only ever moves forward, so the expiry you see on a listing or offer is the least you get.

Open and checkable

The registry is three small contracts on Kaspa mainnet, written in Silverscript. Their source code, the exact deployed bytecode and a tool to check it all against the chain are public.
